Film Making Workshop – Presented by New York Film Academy
Designed to be part of the Universal Studios Educational and Recreational Programs catalogue, the New York Film Academy has created a series of workshops intended to expose visiting students to both filmmaking and acting for film. Students will be immersed in hands-on intensive classes which will both enrich and engage them while at the same time provide practical film and acting techniques and experience. Workshops can range from forty-five to ninety minutes in length and will be operated solely by the New York Film Academy. Schools may elect to participate in specific parts or all components of each workshop. There are no prerequisites or prior experience required. All equipment and materials needed for the course will be provided by the Academy. All workshops take place inside the park at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Schools may select from one of the following three workshops during their visit to Universal Studios:
- Directing Workshop
Students are exposed to the language of film, learning to best effectively cover a scene. The elements of mise-en-scene, proper shot selection, camera movement, and communicating with actors will all be explored. Students will then put these concepts into practice in the production of a short project. They will collectively plan and design effective coverage for a scene and execute the shot list in a supervised production setting. Each student will perform in multiple crew positions, including director and camera operator, in the completion of a short film project.
- Cinematography Workshop
Students will light, block, and design multiple lighting set-ups, focusing on creating a uniform look and feel to a scene. In addition to the technical aspects of setting a mood, students will explore the creative choices a cinematographer must make to best convey the directors’ vision. Students will function as a full crew, lighting the scenes, as well as blocking cast, in the execution of a fully designed shooting plan for a complete scene.
- Acting and Filmmaking Combination Workshop
In this hands on program students will be exposed to both acting and filmmaking. They will participate in directing and scene study workshops culminating in the production of a small short scene which they will both serve on as cast and crew. At the conclusion of the workshop students will understand the complexity of both maintaining and executing the beats of a story both in front of and behind the camera.
